MESSAGE FROM THE COMMISSIONER:
Dear AGSL Family:
We are excited for another great year of softball at Amherst Girls Softball League. Great softball, new friends, skill development, plenty of fun, and awesome memories are in store for our girls this year.
We are continuing with the elimination of the requirement for parents to work in our high-quality snack bar, giving them the opportunity to watch their daughters play. We are constantly evolving to improve at AGSL and would welcome any suggestions.
Amherst Girls Softball League is one of the largest girls’ house softball leagues in New York. We take great pride in our organization as the premier girls’ softball organization in the area. Our house program develops girls, builds team work, and creates lasting memories of fun. Our Lightning and Thunder travel programs are also very well respected and have consistently been highly competitive.
The Aunt Rosie's tournaments showcase extremely talented teams from across the U.S. and Canada. I recommend coming to watch a game or two this summer. Our Lightning teams represent AGSL very well year round and in the Aunt Rosie's tournaments.
We are a volunteer run organization, and we appreciate the many volunteers that keep our organization strong. Our volunteers at AGSL take developing our girls very seriously - understanding they are our future leaders. To that end, we would love to welcome anyone that would be willing to join the AGSL Board of Directors. We have several openings. Please consider joining as we welcome new ideas and ways to improve AGSL. The more people we have on the board, the more perspectives and ideas we can share to allow the league to continue to thrive and grow.
Softball has always been very near and dear to my heart. I have a passion for the game and love seeing the girls continue to exhibit the same passion on the diamonds.
Please encourage relatives and friends to join. The more the merrier!
This summer is going to be great. We are also going to have a fall season again this year. I look forward to seeing many of you at the facility. Please introduce yourself when you see me at the fields! Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
As an update, I have been inundated with requests for information regarding AGSL losing three of its diamonds and the plan for the future. We have been working with the Town of Amherst to resolve the loss of fields and to ensure the long term viability of AGSL, which is so important to the community. Supervisor Kulpa, Councilwoman Jacqui Berger and Eric Guzdek, General Manager of the Youth and Recreation Department have stated that they are committed to AGSL to ensure that it will continue to have the same amount of fields or better, without any further interruption. To that end, I have met with Councilwoman Berger and Mr. Guzdek on many occasions to discuss all possible options to ensure that AGSL has sufficient fields to meet its needs and the needs of the community, both short term and long term. Ultimately, the town negotiated to lease land from the gun club, adjacent to our current remaining four diamonds. There, the town is building another four diamonds to replace the three that were taken away due to real estate sale. The new diamonds will be adjacent to our current diamonds and in close proximity, which is very exciting. Work is already underway and the town anticipates that the diamonds will be complete this summer but sadly not in time for the start of the season as weather has caused delays. Let's hope that the weather starts to cooperates. We can't wait for the new diamonds to be finished, which will enhance the AGSL complex. We are looking forward to having the girls play on the new fields and see our beautiful enhanced facility. As updates on construction become available, I will let you know.
Sincerely,
Michelle D. Maccagnano
